A business rules engine, commonly referred to as a BRE, is software that executes business rules or decision logic, separately from application code. It is often part of a business rules management system (BRMS) or decision platform.

Managing business rules outside of code enables non-technical users, often subject matter experts, to maintain the logic that powers the business.
